Airships Over Calgary Today, Yellowknife Tomorrow

About Us

In 2024, 21 children were hospitalized in Iqaluit for malnutrition. Twenty-one. That is 90 times the national average, yet likely highly underreports the degree of malnutrition in the region.

Canada is one of the richest countries in the world, but much of its territory is isolated from that wealth. While many reasons are given for this, the primary one is simply logistics. It is difficult to move people and things to small, poor, far-away places--especially when those places are founded on permafrost and covered in snow.

For decades, engineers, logisticians, and government officials have known that the best solution to this problem is the introduction of cargo airships. These massive vehicles will be capable of hauling 30, 60, or even 100 tonnes of cargo over potentially thousands of kilometers with little-to-no infrastructure to support them. Accordingly, hundreds of millions of dollars have been invested into developing this technology worldwide.

Despite this, no cargo airships have been produced on a commercial scale. We at Northern Dawn believe this is because "the reason there are no airships in Canada, is because there are no airships in Canada". That is: introducing cargo airships with no intermediary phase in Canada will be highly difficult and unnecessarily long.

There are a number of factors underlying this claim: regulatory, labour-market, political, risk-management. But the conclusion remains that to create the ideal conditions for the introduction of cargo airships into Canada--and therefore to alleviate the crushing cost of living concerns in the North--airships must already be an operative and visual force in Canada.

That is where we come in.

Northern Dawn is committed to transforming the operating environment for airships in Canada by introducing a state-of-the-art tourism airship into the Calgary/Foothills region of Alberta to provide sightseeing tours and aerial advertising. Through these low-risk endeavours, we hope to create a domestic labour force of capable pilots and mechanics; to create preconditions for regulatory updates and clarification; and to create a groundswell of public awareness and support for large-scale investment into northern cargo airships.

Once established, we intend to begin passenger traffic between northern communities and mines, and later provide the primary domestic expertise and labour force to operate cargo airships as they are developed and released onto the market.

Frequently Asked Questions

Once funding is obtained, our manufacturer will begin construction on our first airship. We anticipate engaging in practice flights in the Foothills and Calgary area approximately 2.5-3 years after reaching this threshold. Passenger flights will commence 3-6 months after practice flights.

At present, we intend to fly regularly over the Foothills region south-west of Calgary, in the Bow River Valley as far west as Ghost lake, and over the City of Calgary. Occasional flights over Drumheller or chartered flights may become available over time.

While we cannot promise anything at this time, our current forecasts are based on $400 tickets for flights of up to 2 hours.

We are currently looking at locations in the vicinity of High River, 35 minutes south of Calgary on Highway 2.
